WFP & Kuwait Host Photo Exhibition Highlighting Partnership To Assist Syrians In Crisis
ROME – A photographic exhibition opened today at the headquarters of the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) in Rome, showcasing the vital assistance brought to the people of Syria through the strong partnership between the State of Kuwait and WFP.

His Highness the Emir of the State of Kuwait, Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmed Al Jaber Al Sabah was recognized and awarded in September 2014 by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon as a “Humanitarian Leader”, especially with regard to the Syria crisis.  To date, Kuwait has provided US$77 million towards WFP’s Syria emergency response.

“We welcome the generosity and leadership of His Highness the Emir of the State of Kuwait, Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmed Al Jaber Al Sabah, whose support for WFP means that millions of vulnerable women, men, boys and girls are receiving the assistance they require.  Food represents a lifeline, as well as hope for a better future,” said WFP Executive Director Ertharin Cousin, opening the exhibition

Speaking at the ceremony, H.E. Sheikh Ali Al Khaled Al Sabah, Ambassador of the State of Kuwait to Italy said: “We also hail the good efforts of the World Food Programme for the delivery of humanitarian assistance provided by the State of Kuwait to the needy and destitute Syrian people. We underscore, on this occasion, our deep desire to extend our assistance to our brothers in Syria and in any other Arab country.”

The images show the impact even a simple piece of bread, baked in Zaatari refugee camp in Jordan, can have on a child who has grown up knowing nothing but war. An extended version of the exhibition will travel next week to Kuwait City prior to the Kuwait III pledging conference, to be inaugurated by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sheikh Sabah Al Khalid Al Sabah on 23 March.
