WFP Loses Five Trucks After Convoy Seized By Armed Men In Badakhshan Province

The convoy of five trucks had delivered food to the most vulnerable people in Yawan district when it was stopped by unknown armed men on the return trip to Faizabad.

The trucks and drivers were held by the armed men for one night. On   September 12, the trucks were reportedly destroyed and the drivers released. None of the drivers were harmed during the incident and are now safely back with their families.  

“WFP greatly appreciates the assistance of the local community who immediately informed us of the incident,” said Angelline Rudakubana, WFP  deputy country director.   “We regret that we have had to put on hold all our food movement in Badakhashan province until further notice, impacting WFP’s food assistance to the most vulnerable,”

An investigation into the incident is on-going and WFP is closely monitoring the situation with all relevant parties.
