WFP calls for more investment in school meals by West African governments

DAKAR – The United Nations World Food Programme today urged governments in West Africa to invest more money in school meal programmes so these can act as a catalyst for improved economic and social welfare communities across the region. The call was made on African Day of School Feeding which is being celebrated for the third year in a row.

WASHINGTON/ROME - The United Nations World Food Programme welcomes new funding from the U.S. Department of Agriculture that will provide daily school meals for nearly half a million children in four countries over the next several years through the McGovern-Dole International Food for Education Program.

WFP Welcomes Korea’s Contribution To Its School Meals Programme in The Gambia

BANJUL – The Republic of Korea has contributed more than $US300, 000 to the UN World Food Programme (WFP)’s School Meals Programme in The Gambia. This will make it possible for WFP to expand its community based cash transfer to schools and reach up to 20,000 students with daily hot meals for eight months.

Star Chef Cooks For Sahel’s Children As Fresh Milk Fuels The Hopes Of Thousands

OUAGADOUGOU – In a region where school enrolment rates are very low, and early marriages a major cause of dropout among young girls, the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has set up school canteens to help reduce malnutrition rates and to keep children in school. For better results, the organization has partnered with a women’s group that specializes in milk processing.

Minister Visits EU-Funded WFP Project Aimed At Keeping Children In School

CAIRO – The Egyptian Minister of International Cooperation, Dr. Sahar Nasr, visited a community school in the Upper Egyptian governorate of Qena supported by the "Enhancing Access to Education and Fighting Child Labour” project funded by the European Union (EU) and implemented by the World Food Programme (WFP). The EU has allocated a €60 million grant for this project.

WFP School Meals In Jeopardy For Children In Mali As School Year Starts

BAMAKO – As schools resume next week in Mali, school meals for nearly 180,000 children in about 1,000 schools are in jeopardy due to financial constraints at the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) – the main supporter of such initiatives. Unless US$3 million in funding is found urgently, WFP will have to suspend its school meals programme in Mali.
