WFP Executive Director Meets Egyptian President In Rome

ROME – United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) Executive Director Ertharin Cousin met today with His Excellency Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi on his official trip to Rome.

Cousin briefed the Egyptian President on WFP operations worldwide and its programmes in Egypt. WFP, which has its headquarters in Rome, has worked in Egypt since 1968, running innovative projects targeting the most vulnerable who need additional support beyond the Government’s safety net programmes for the poor.

In 2013, WFP started programmes to support over 120,000 farmers facing climate change in rural areas of Upper Egypt through innovative agricultural methods to increase farm production.

WFP is also running a school-feeding programme, which benefits annually over 235,000 children, mainly girls, in the most impoverished and remote areas of the country. Egypt’s vibrant private sector has been the cornerstone of this programme through its generous support to WFP.

WFP in Egypt recently signed a new four-year partnership with the European Union to expand projects fighting child labour. Each year, the programme will provide food assistance to an additional 100,000 children who are former child labourers or at risk of being pulled into the labour market, in addition to assisting 400,000 of their family members.

Additionally, each month more than 100,000 Syrian refugees in Egypt receive WFP food vouchers.
