WFP In Partnership With ADRA Ukraine Launches Food Assistance For About 7,000 People In Hospitals And Schools In Eastern Ukraine

KIEV – The United Nations World Food Programme said today it started distributing food to patients in hospitals and schools students in conflict-affected areas in Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts.

The food assistance will be distributed by ADRA Ukraine, which is a part of worldwide network of Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) to about 7,000 people in the following towns: Starobilsk, Svatovo, Troyitsk, Belokurakino, Markovka, Novopskov, Belovodsk, Melove, Severodonetsk, Popasnaya, Gorske, Rubizhne, Kriminna, Nova Astrakhan, Svyatogirsk, Krasnyi Lyman, Slavyansk, Kramatorsk, Druzhkivka, Konstyantynivka, Mariupol, Dymytriv, Dzerzhynsk, Volodarske, Artemivsk.

“We realized that due to increased food prices, low income and humanitarian crisis hospitals patients and students became more vulnerable. ’We work closely with local authorities, WFP and WHO (the World Health Organization), as well regional organizations to identify their needs. Volunteers and community health workers are also very involved,’’ said Anatoliy Begas, ADRA Ukraine Country Director.

‘’The conflict has resulted in shelling into residential areas resulting in deaths and injuries of civilians and destruction of property and infrastructure including, hospitals and schools. By providing food in these institutions, we want to ensure that these vulnerable population have access to sufficient nutritious food to stay healthy,’’ said Giancarlo Stopponi , WFP Representative in Ukraine.

On 28 October 2015, WFP received official accreditation from the Government of Ukraine.  The decree of the Cabinet of Ministers No. 1106-R of October 28, 2015 was published on Friday 30 October 2015, on the official website of the Government of Ukraine.

Under its ongoing Emergency operation launched in November 2014, WFP plans to provide assistance to 575,000 people by the end of 2015.  In partnership with several NGOs, including ADRA Ukraine, WFP has already provided food assistance to more than 250,000 people among the most venerable population affected by the conflict in Lugansk and Donetsk regions.
