WFP To Provide Technical Advice In Support Of Mexico’s “National Crusade Against Hunger”
ROME – The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) announced today that it will provide technical support to the Government of Mexico’s efforts to eradicate hunger and malnutrition through its newly created “National Crusade against Hunger”.
“We want to congratulate President Peña Nieto for this new initiative to help the most vulnerable, and WFP is ready to share with the Government of Mexico more than 50 years of experience in the fight against hunger worldwide, to contribute to this imperative effort,” said WFP Executive Director, Ertharin Cousin after a meeting with the President of Mexico at the Embassy of Mexico in Rome.
The National Crusade against Hunger is a new initiative that will coordinate the work of government institutions in 400 of the poorest municipalities in the country to promote good nutrition and farming practices to eradicate hunger and child malnutrition.
In the coming weeks, WFP experts based in the agency’s Regional Bureau in Panama will visit Mexico to contribute to laying out a cooperation programme that will boost national efforts in this crusade against hunger, by exchanging knowledge and experience in nutrition, home-grown school feeding, and the Purchase for Progress initiative (P4P), a project that aims to connect smallholder farmers to local markets.
Cousin paid tribute to Mexico’s important role in promoting South-South cooperation, particularly in the fields of nutrition and social protection.
