More than 400 staff members of Unilever Germany went to sell margarine in 503 Rewe supermarkets for one day last week, raising more than 100,000 Euros for school meals in Kenya. The money will pay for half a million nutritious school meals for hungry children.

BERLIN -- With their bright red “Join us!” T-shirts on, 400 staff members jumped into their cars at the Unilever office in Hamburg and drove off to Rewe supermarkets all over northern Germany.
Supporters like Arne Kirchem from the Unilever Marketing Division set up margarine booths and from them presented leaflets on WFP school meals in Kenya to thousands of customers. “I wanted to support the world’s poorest, because every child has a right to good nutrition”, said Kirchem.
Unilever and Rewe, Germany’s second largest food retailer, donated 100% of all margarine sales on the day to WFP school meals in Kenya. Every single pot of “Rama” margarine (cost 1.19 Euros) sold contributed to almost six school meals for a Kenyan child. By the end of the day 101,583 Euros had been raised, enough for more than 500,000 school meals in Kenya.
“We are really proud that our employees show such a great commitment at all our WFP charity events,” commented Harry Brouwer, Chairman of Unilever Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Brouwer himself contributed to the success by selling margarine in supermarkets in Hamburg.
Future without hunger
Kenya is one of the key countries where WFP and Unilever join forces to offer poor children a future without hunger. Currently more than 700,000 Kenyan children receive WFP school meals, for many of them the only meal in a day and the basis for attending classes instead of working or begging for the daily meal.
Global consumer good company Unilever has supported WFP in its fight against hunger since 2007 with financial ressources and its nutrition knowhow. Its latest contribution was a 200,000 Euro donation to the WFP emergency operation in Pakistan out of a total 1 million Euro to five agencies.
Unilever staff members have donated more than 35,000 US$ to WFP for flood victims in Pakistan on the global Unilever website alone.
