Since 2011, 12 million women, children and men, equivalent to half of the Syrian population, have been forced to flee their homes. Many have left seeking refuge abroad but others stayed in the war-torn country. In September 2015, WFP stopped providing food assistance to 360,000 Syrian refugees and cut the rations for those inside Syria for a quarter due to funding shortages.
