South Sudan: ‘Food Alone Is Not Enough’

Food alone is not enough to address the nutrition crisis in South Sudan, WFP’s Executive Director Ertharin Cousin said during a trip to the devastated city of Malakal on 25 July. Getting the situation under control also requires a drastic improvement in living conditions, she stressed. Together with UNICEF chief Tony Lake, Cousin was visiting a UN base where thousands of people are taking shelter. The UN agency heads fear the world is allowing early warnings of extreme hunger and malnutrition to go largely unheeded until official famine levels are announced.
