WFP Mounts Emergency Operation to Provide Food for Refugees Fleeing Burundi (For the Media)

WFP is concerned that the political crisis in Burundi could lead to a humanitarian crisis. It is already causing tens of thousands of people to flee to neighbouring countries.  It is also affecting food security inside Burundi, which is already one of the poorest and most food insecure countries on earth. WFP is providing food and nutrition assistance to more than 60,000 Burundian refugees who have fled to Rwanda, Tanzania and DRC and that number is growing. WFP and other humanitarian partners are preparing to assist more if needed. WFP is providing ready-to-eat food (dates) to refugees as they arrive at Kagunga village and to those in transit to Nyarugusu Refugee Camp. On arrival at the camp and Kigoma Stadium, refugees are served with a hot meal and receive High Energy Biscuits once registered, WFP provides them with a two-week dry food ration of maize, beans, oil, salt and Super Cereal (fortified Corn Soya blend).  They will be incorporated into WFP’s ongoing General Food Distribution and other programmes once they are settled in a camp.
