The Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Initiatives Contributes AED43 Million to Support WFP’s Direct Food Aid in Gaza
Directed by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, this contribution is part of MBRGI’s continued efforts to address urgent humanitarian needs in Gaza. With this latest support, MBRGI’s total financial contribution to WFP projects now amount to AED 230 million (over US $62.6 million) since the collaboration began in 2021.
His Excellency Mohammad Al Gergawi, Secretary General of MBRGI said: “Following directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, MBRGI continues to provide food support for Palestinians in Gaza amidst the dire humanitarian conditions they face due to recent events.” “The recent MBRGI contribution is part of the UAE’s ongoing efforts to support Palestinians and help those affected in Gaza. The agreement with WFP will help extend the reach of direct food support by WFP to reach one million people in Gaza,” he added.
The agreement signed at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, by HE Al Gergawi and WFP Executive Director Cindy McCain, also includes plans to implement sustainable food projects to support vulnerable populations in Gaza. These initiatives aim to support vulnerable populations and contribute to long-term food security, furthering global efforts toward achieving the second Sustainable Development Goal of zero hunger by 2030.
“This generous contribution comes at a crucial time to help address the fast-growing nutritional needs of the affected Palestinians. it will bolster WFP's efforts in providing life-saving food assistance to civilians facing critical levels of food insecurity in the Gaza Strip. It also signifies an extension of the longstanding collaboration between MBRGI and WFP.” said Samer Abdeljaber, WFP Palestine Representative and Country Director.
The contribution comes as Gaza faces alarming levels of food insecurity, with recent reports warning of potential famine if current conditions persist. In December alone, WFP reached over 900,000 people in Gaza with daily food assistance, underscoring the urgent need for continued support.
This partnership further demonstrates the UAE’s steadfast commitment to global humanitarian efforts, ensuring vital aid reaches communities in need and paving the way for sustainable solutions to food insecurity.
