Government of Australia supports WFP's emergency response to flood-affected communities in Nepal

The floods that hit northern Nepal on 26 August 2026 have caused widespread destruction, particularly in Rasuwa and downstream districts, leaving thousands of people in urgent need of humanitarian assistance. Damage to roads, bridges, settlements, and critical infrastructure has severely disrupted access to affected communities, creating significant challenges for relief operations.

Through the Government of Australia's timely support, WFP will strengthen its capacity to provide life-saving food assistance and logistics services in support of the Government of Nepal's response efforts. WFP has already dispatched emergency food supplies, including 2.4 metric tons of ready-to-eat food (high-energy biscuits) for the affected families who do not have access to cooking facilities, and is facilitating the transportation of relief items to affected communities through air and ground operations.

"At a time when thousands of families are facing immense hardship, this contribution will help WFP and its partners deliver urgent assistance to communities affected by the floods and support ongoing government-led response efforts."

Australia's contribution will enable WFP to continue providing critical logistics support, including the transportation and coordination of humanitarian relief supplies, while enhancing the ability of responders to reach communities cut off by damaged infrastructure and challenging terrain.

Simon Ernst, the Australian Ambassador to Nepal. “Australia's contribution reflects our commitment to supporting communities affected by disasters across the region. Through WFP's expertise in emergency food assistance and logistics, this funding will help ensure critical aid reaches people impacted by the floods, including those in remote and hard-to-reach areas.”

As part of the emergency response, WFP is working closely with the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA), the Ministry of Home Affairs, local authorities, UN agencies, and humanitarian partners to assess needs and ensure assistance reaches those most affected. Additional personnel, food supplies, and logistics assets remain on standby as humanitarian needs continue to evolve.
