Republic of Korea provides USD 5 million for emergency food assistance and school meals in Sudan

“This contribution from the Republic of Korea comes at a critical moment when millions of people in Sudan are struggling to meet their food needs in areas where conflict continues,” said Abdallah Alwardat, WFP’s Country Director in Sudan. “Where displaced families are returning, school meals can help girls and boys return to classrooms and communities regain a measure of stability.”

The contribution will enable WFP to procure 2,600 mt of sorghum and millet for emergency food assistance in conflict-affected areas, where many families rely on WFP for survival, and a further 500 mt of cereals for school meals. 

WFP is working to resume school feeding for 450,000 children across nine of Sudan’s 18 states after conflict largely suspended the programme. The Republic of Korea’s contribution will support children in selected primary schools in Khartoum State during the 2026/2027 school year. 

“The Republic of Korea stands with the people in need of lifesaving food assistance and is proud to help restart school feeding in Khartoum State after three years of suspension due to the conflict,” said Sang-tae Park, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea in Sudan. “Through the partnership with WFP, we bring some relief and stability to communities affected by conflict and hunger.”

Since the conflict began in April 2023, the Republic of Korea has contributed USD 17.7 million to WFP’s operations in Sudan. The funding has supported life-saving food and nutrition assistance and helped sustain the United Nations Humanitarian Air Service (UNHAS), which transports humanitarian personnel and supplies across the country.
