WFP appoints South Korean actress Moon So-ri as Goodwill Ambassador
During the announcement ceremony in Seoul, Moon spoke of her October visit to Kenya, where she witnessed WFP’s work first-hand and saw the impact of funding shortfalls on refugee communities.
“Through the stories of the refugees I met in Kenya, I was reminded that food is not just a meal — it carries hope, courage, kindness, and the bonds that connect us,” she said. “Witnessing people who cannot access even the minimum food they need made me feel an urgent responsibility to raise greater awareness. As a WFP Goodwill Ambassador, I hope to help amplify the reality of hunger and the importance of solidarity.”
Moon is one of South Korea's most acclaimed actors, with a distinguished career spanning film, television, and directing. She won Best New Actress at the Venice Film Festival in 2002 and became the first Korean actress to serve on its jury.
“Moon So-ri is a powerful storyteller, a trusted public voice, and someone who has consistently engaged with social issues,” said Angie Lee, Director of the WFP Seoul Office. “We are truly delighted to welcome her to the WFP family, and we believe her engagement will be a meaningful step in our journey toward a world without hunger.”
Prior to her appointment, Moon contributed to two WFP videos, highlighting the organization’s life-saving work in some of the world’s most remote and fragile communities. She also emphasized that achieving Zero Hunger is impossible without gender equality — a core message of WFP’s mission.
WFP works in more than 120 countries and territories, supporting people affected by conflict, disasters, and climate crisis. The organization received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2020 for its efforts to combat hunger and contribute to peace in conflict-affected areas. Once a recipient of WFP assistance 60 years ago, today the Republic of Korea is a major donor and valued partner of WFP, supporting emergency relief and resilience programmes worldwide.
As a WFP Goodwill Ambassador, Moon will participate in a range of campaigns to raise awareness of the food crisis and encourage collective action and solidarity.

She made her debut in 1999 and won the Best New Actress Award at the Venice International Film Festival in 2002, marking the beginning of a distinguished career across critically acclaimed films and series.
Most recently, Moon starred in the Netflix Original series When Life Gives You Tangerines (2025), which ranked among Netflix’s Top 10 programmes in 41 countries. Her portrayal of a resilient woman navigating life’s challenges resonated deeply with global audiences. Beyond acting, she is also a film director and screenwriter, and became the first Korean actress to serve as a jury member at the Venice International Film Festival.
