CAIRO/PORT SAID, Egypt – The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) welcomes a critical contribution from France to support life saving nutrition assistance for vulnerable families in the Gaza Strip.

As part of the contribution, a shipment, transporting approximately 400 metric tons of specialized nutritious supplements intended for more than 40,000 children under five for five months arrived in Port Said, Egypt, on 4 February. The cargo has now been handed over to WFP for onward distribution.

This contribution highlights France’s commitment to supporting vital humanitarian efforts while fostering private sector engagement to help meet urgent humanitarian needs. The shipment was undertaken by the CMA CGM Foundation, a French shipping company.

France is a leading supporter of WFP’s operations in Gaza and across the State of Palestine, contributing USD16.3 million in 2025 alone — making WFP the largest recipient of French contributions to Palestine last year.

“This humanitarian cargo of nearly 400 tons of nutritional supplements destined for the Gaza Strip will benefit more than 40,000 Gazan children and provide them with nutrition support. It is the result of a collective mobilization of the French authorities, the World Food Programme and the CMA CGM Foundation, as well as Egypt’s central role in the humanitarian response,” said H.E. Éric Chevallier, Ambassador of France to Egypt. “France remains fully committed to full, safe and unhindered humanitarian access throughout the Gaza Strip, in accordance with international humanitarian law."

“France continues to demonstrate strong leadership in supporting WFP’s work in Gaza, ensuring that vulnerable mothers and young children have access to vital nutrition,” said Samer Abdeljaber, WFP Regional Director for the Middle East, North Africa and Eastern Europe. “This contribution, strengthened by collaboration with French private sector partners, is a powerful example of how strategic partnerships can expand our reach and impact across the region.”

France remains a key donor to WFP’s operations across the Middle East, North Africa and Eastern Europe, contributing nearly USD112 million in 2025 to support programmes in Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Palestine, Syria, Ukraine and Yemen.

Under a multi‑year partnership, the CMA CGM Foundation provides WFP with containers and maritime transport through the Containers of Hope programme, supporting the delivery of food and other humanitarian assistance worldwide.

WFP has significantly expanded its life-saving operations across Gaza, now reaching more than one million people each month through food parcels, bread bundles, hot meals, school meals and cash assistance.

Continued support from key donors, such as France, remains essential for WFP to sustain and scale up operations in Gaza and other major emergencies. Together, we remain committed to ensuring that life‑saving food and nutrition assistance can reach families – effectively, efficiently, and with impact - at a time when global humanitarian needs remain at record levels amid severe funding shortfalls.
