WFP Welcomes Japan’s US$63.7M Contribution to Food Assistance Activities in 27 Countries and Regions Worldwide
US$28.7 million will support emergency food assistance in Palestine, where communities continue to face severe food insecurity. While conditions have gradually improved since the October 2025 ceasefire, needs remain immense. Japan’s contribution ensures WFP can continue delivering essential food supplies to families who have endured months of crisis.
In Afghanistan, which has been heavily impacted by severe flooding and earthquakes, US$4.2 million will support emergency food and nutrition assistance. Japan has also allocated US$5.2 million for communities affected by the recent major earthquake in Myanmar, and US$2 million to support people in Pakistan recovering from severe floods.
This contribution also reflects Japan’s longstanding commitment to global food security and its leadership during the 9th Tokyo International Conference on African Development in August 2025, which focused on 18 countries in Africa.
US$2 million of the contribution will support the integration of school meals and access to clean water to safeguard the right to education in humanitarian crisis settings in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It will also provide emergency food and nutrition assistance to vulnerable people affected by conflict and humanitarian crises, as well as operational funding for the United Nations Humanitarian Air Service (UNHAS).
Another US$0.84 million will bolster youth-led AI and digital innovations in Zimbabwe, leveraging collaboration with Japanese private sector partners to improve food security and resilience.
“We extend our deepest gratitude to the Government of Japan for its generous support,” said Yasuhiro Tsumura, Director of the WFP Japan Relations Office. “WFP will optimize its strong operational capacity on the ground to deliver these precious contributions from Japan to the most vulnerable, who are facing ongoing conflicts and natural disasters. Even amid global funding shortfalls, our mission to achieve a world free of hunger remains unwavering. We humbly ask for the continued support of the people of Japan.”
Japan has regularly ranked among WFP’s ten most generous national government donors. Countries and regions receiving assistance from Japan’s US$67.3 million supplementary budget include: Afghanistan, Angola, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Djibouti, Haiti, Kenya, Lebanon, Madagascar, Mali, Myanmar, Nigeria, Pakistan, Rwanda, Somalia, South Sudan, Palestine,Sudan, Tanzania, Thailand, Uganda, Ukraine, Yemen, and Zimbabwe.
