Sustainable Healthy Diets in Cambodia: Evidence for Transforming Food Systems, Executive Summary

https://docs.wfp.org/api/documents/WFP-0000167895/download/

This joint analysis by the World Food Programme and the World Bank provides evidence on how dietary shifts and accompanying food system transformation could simultaneously improve human health and reduce environmental impacts.

Current diets—dominated by rice and sugary and ultra-processed food and drinks — are fuelling malnutrition and non-communicable diseases, while also harming the environment. Using the WFP Enhance platform, the report models affordable, nutritious, and climate-friendly “healthy diet baskets” that reduce rice intake, boost fruit and vegetable consumption, and promote sustainable protein sources like legumes, eggs and small fish.

The analysis shows that these dietary shifts, combined with climate-smart food production practices and rice fortification, could cut food-related greenhouse gas emissions by over 50 percent, improve public health, increase diet affordability, and support Cambodia’s climate goals. It also outlines practical policy actions to overcome barriers and reshape food environments.
