Chad

Chad, a landlocked Sahelian country in Central Africa, is highly vulnerable to recurrent climate shocks, particularly droughts and floods which exacerbate the impact of chronic poverty and inequality. Poverty and vulnerability remain widespread.

As a pillar of relative stability in an increasingly fragile region, Chad hosts one of Africa's largest and fastest-growing refugee populations – numbering 1.5 million people, including more than 940,600 individuals who have fled Sudan since the outbreak of conflict in April 2023. This sustained influx of refugees and returnees places additional pressure on already scarce natural resources, public infrastructure, and basic social services.

Meanwhile, Chad's Lac Province remains one of the country's most fragile and complex humanitarian contexts, where chronic insecurity, displacement, environmental degradation and climate-related shocks converge to erode livelihoods and weaken community resilience.

Alarming levels of hunger persist among both refugees and host communities in Chad. The latest Cadre Harmonisé (Integrated Food Security Phase Classification) analysis projected that nearly 3.2 million people, representing almost 15 percent of Chad's population, would face acute food insecurity during the June to August 2026 lean season.

The World Food Programme is on the ground providing life-saving assistance to the most vulnerable populations, while also partnering with the Government to strengthen resilience and support long-term development initiatives. These efforts aim to reduce dependence on humanitarian assistance by fostering self-reliant communities and sustainable food systems that can deliver lasting food security.
