Seasonal and agricultural monitoring

Assessing the development of agricultural growing seasons and its impact on the lives and livelihoods of local populations enables the World Food Programme (WFP) to keep track of events and highlight situations of humanitarian concern.

Drawing on the skills and expertise of highly specialized staff, WFP processes large amounts of weather and Earth Observation data into key indicators that are combined with additional information – for example on environmental and socioeconomic factors – into narrative reports.

These seasonal reports provide context and outline short to medium term perspectives for food security and livelihoods, in an accessible and ready to use format, helping WFP to develop intervention strategies before a crisis occurs.

The humanitarian implications of broader phenomena with far-reaching implications, such as El Niño, are analysed in specific thematic publications, which include a projection of the expected humanitarian response required.
