DSM is a global science-based company active in health, nutrition and materials, and one of the world’s largest producers of micronutrients. They have been a valuable partner of WFP since 2007, helping us develop cost-effective and sustainable, nutritious food solutions for the hungry poor. In 2017, over 39.4 million people benefited from improved nutrition thanks to the WFP-DSM partnership, which has contributed to improving the diets of people, using essential vitamins, nutrients and fortified rice in countries that include Nepal, Kenya, Bangladesh and Afghanistan.

Nutrition enhancement: DSM food technology, packaging and other experts are working with WFP to research and develop new or enhanced fortified foods and measure their effects on the nutritional state of people served by WFP. The partnership has a systematic approach to development and improvement of products, including testing for acceptance and, in some cases, impact.

Capacity at WFP: DSM has supported WFP in strengthening and expanding its focus on nutrition, including capacity development (hiring staff, designing training modules), implementing nutrition-specific interventions with better products and tools, and increasing awareness of nutrition in nutrition-sensitive approaches.

Involving DSM’s employees: DSM employees in offices and production sites in 50 countries around the world are crucial in bringing the partnership to life, both through general advocacy and fundraising activities and by volunteering their time and expertise to help WFP address specific issues.

Partnership impact:

  • In 2017, the partnership reached over 39.4 million people with improved nutrition. 
  • DSM has developed together with WFP a micronutrient powder for home-fortification that allows families to add micronutrients directly to their food just before consumption. This innovative solution has been piloted in several countries and has been successful in combating malnutrition. 
  • DSM has also helped WFP pilot projects using a range of tailored solutions, such as fortified date bars, fortified rice and highly nutritional wheat and corn-soya blends (super cereal / super cereal +) aimed at addressing the micronutrient needs of different cultures and societies around the world. 
  • DSM employees, including experts in nutrition and food technology, economics, and marketing and communications, have volunteered in the field to support WFP projects in places such as Bangladesh, Guatemala, Kenya and Zambia .
  • DSM was recognised for its commitment under the partnership by being among the 2010 recipients of the World Business and Development Awards presented during the United Nations Millennium Development Goals Summit in New York.   
  • DSM’s CEO, Feike Sijbesma received the 2010 Humanitarian of the Year Award from the United Nations Association of New York in recognition for his commitment to corporate social responsibility in general, and for DSM’s partnership with WFP in particular.
