European Union funded World Food Programme (WFP) project

As part of the national response to the worst period of drought in decades, exacerbated by the 2015/16 El Niño weather event, the European Union (EU) signed a partnership with the World Food Programme (WFP) of €13 million to support its humanitarian operations in Mozambique.

At the start of each year, Mozambique is often hit by floods and cyclones which destroy infrastructure and people’s livelihoods. However, at other times of the year, as was the case in 2016, the country is prone to drought, which can cause widespread loss of crops and livestock, leading to hunger among more vulnerable communities.

As a result of the drought, some 2.3 million people were food insecure and in need of assistance to support them during the lean season. The funds enabled WFP to assist more than 270,000 smallholder farmers whose crops were devastated by high temperatures and lack of rain during the 2015/2016 agricultural season.

WFP activities were designed to address immediate food needs while at the same time helping vulnerable communities to withstand future shocks.  Assistance was provided in-kind, comprising cereals, pulses and cooking oil whilst plans are underway to start cash-based transfers in some parts of the country.

To complement ongoing activities, the EU-funded project also provides for Social Behavior Change Communication (SBCC) activities to ensure uptake of nutrition rehabilitation services offered to malnourished children (6-59 months) and pregnant and nursing women in   drought-affected districts of Mozambique.
