Japan helps WFP provide vital support to Syrian refugees in Turkey camps
This contribution will allow WFP to assist 25,890 beneficiaries inside six camps in southeastern Turkey for three months.
WFP provides electronic vouchers to camp residents, enabling them to purchase food and other basic items. The cards are loaded with a monthly sum of TRY 100 (18 euros) per person, TRY 80 (13 euros) of which is allocated for food.
“WFP is grateful to the Government and people of Japan who have always been generous in helping the Syrian refugee population in Turkey’s camps,” said WFP Representative and Country Director in Turkey Nils Grede. “This contribution allows us to continue providing vital assistance to people in need.”
This renewed support brings Japan humanitarian assistance to Syrian refugees in Turkey camps to more than $23.5 million since 2012.
Turkey hosts the largest refugee population in the world – 4 million people, including 3.6 million from Syria.
WFP has been helping Syrian, and other refugees, both in and outside camps in Turkey since 2012 through cash assistance and livelihood enhancing programmes.
