Sri Lanka Country Programme (2016-2017)

Operation ID: 200866

Following the emergency interventions and PRROs in response to a protracted civil war and a tsunami, WFP now aims, through this Country Programme (CP), to align itself to the Government development priorities in tackling food insecurity, malnutrition and climate shocks as embedded in its commitment to achieve Zero Hunger, as well as sustaining the Development Goals envisioned in its development strategy, such as the Multi-Sector Action Plan for Nutrition, Unstoppable Sri Lanka 2020, and others. The goal of this two-year CP is to improve food and nutrition security, and build resilience of vulnerable communities to climate shocks. The CP will be implemented in partnership with the Government, United Nations (UN) agencies and cooperating partners, and has the following objectives:

  • Reduce under-nutrition among children under five and among pregnant and lactating women (PLW) (Strategic Objective 4)
  • Increase food intake and school attendance among primary school children in food insecure areas (Strategic Objective 4)
  • Strengthen resilience of vulnerable households to shocks and adaptation to climate change (Strategic Objective 3)
  • Strengthen government capacity to address food and nutrition insecurity (Strategic Objective 3)

The country office has adequate capacities in vulnerability analysis and mapping, food security assessment and food fortification to improve food security and nutrition in partnership with the Government. Informed by market assessments, beneficiary feedback and post-distribution monitoring, cash-based transfers will be used for all resilience-building activities. In-kind food transfers will be used for nutrition and school feeding.
