Cookie Policy

The United Nations World Food Programme (“WFP”, “we” or “us”) is the world’s largest humanitarian organization saving lives in emergencies. WFP operates globally and is headquartered in Rome, Italy.

This Cookie Policy provides information on how WFP uses cookies and similar technologies (e.g., scripts, tracking pixels, tags, plugins, GIFs, device fingerprinting, server logging, web beacons or web bugs (all of them referred as “Cookies”) in the WFP’s corporate website (www.wfp.org) WFP’s donation platform, fundraising pages and applications, and any other websites and apps managed by WFP, including but not limited to inter-agency booking services, inter-agency collaboration platforms or WFP’s recruitment platform (together referred as the “Sites”). Where a Site has a specific cookie banner, it will apply together with this Cookie Policy and shall prevail in case of conflict.

For the purposes of this Cookie Policy, “User” is any individual browsing the Site.

1. What are Cookies and what they can do?

A Cookie is a file containing an identifier (a string of letters and numbers) that is sent by a web server to a web browser and is temporarily stored in the user device. The identifier is then sent back to the server each time the browser requests a page from the server.

Cookies enable WFP to distinguish Users across WFP Sites. Cookies do not enable WFP to access or read any information on Users’ hard drives - even if cookies are stored there.

Cookies may be associated with identifiable information Users have provided while logging in, accessing WFP donation platform or subscribing to WFP email list. This helps WFP to provide Users with a more personalized user experience, for example, to enable WFP to deliver content relevant to User’s interests.

Cookies may also be deployed on behalf of WFP by partners who provide services on our websites and applications.

2. Type of Cookies

Cookies can be different depending on their purpose:

  • Strictly Necessary Cookies: These Cookies are essential to enable Users to navigate through WFP Sites and use their features, such as accessing secure areas of the Sites. Additionally, functional Cookies allow WFP Sites to remember choices Users make such as username, language, or region they are in and provide a more enhanced personal experience. These cookies are necessary for the website to function and cannot be switched off in our systems. They are usually only set in response to actions made by you which amount to a request for services, such as setting your privacy preferences, logging in or filling in forms. You can set your browser to block or alert you about these cookies, but some parts of the site will not then work. These cookies do not store any personally identifiable information.
  • Performance Cookies: These Cookies collect information about how visitors navigate to and navigate on WFP Sites, for instance which pages they visit, how long they stay on a page and how they use functionalities such as videos, forms, or buttons. This information is used and may be combined with other user information to measure and improve WFP Sites and traffic sources such as (social media) posts and ads.
  • Targeting Cookies: These Cookies collect information about Users’ browsing behavior across websites to build a profile of their interests. The information collected through these Cookies can be used by WFP or its partners, such as advertisers and social media platforms to display personalized ads and content on external websites or other applications.

3. How long does a Cookie stay on my device?

WFP uses ‘session cookies’ and ‘persistent cookies. Session cookies only last until the User leaves the Site. This type of Cookies helps WFP to learn more about User’s experience on the Site during one single browser session. Persistent cookies, instead, have a longer lifespan. These Cookies are primarily used to help Users quickly sign-in to websites and for analytical purposes.

4. Who drops cookies on User devices?

Some cookies are called ‘First Party Cookies’ and others are ‘Third Party Cookies’. First Party Cookies are set and managed by WFP. Third Party Cookies are set and managed by the external providers of services used on the WFP Site, such as digital advertising platforms.

5. How to manage consent for Cookies

Except for certain cookies that are necessary for the WFP Sites to work properly, Users can prevent their device from accepting Cookies, by changing the default settings in their browser settings. Additional information on how to do this is available via the links below:

Please note that by disabling certain Cookies, some functions of the WFP Site might no longer be available.
