WFP and the Government of Armenia provide take-home food rations to 100,000 primary schoolchildren
Yerevan, ARMENIA – The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) and the Government of Republic of Armenia (GoA) will jointly provide take-home rations for around 100,000 primary children while school canteens remain closed as part of the COVID-19 pandemic safety regulations.
WFP in partnership with the GoA adjusted the operations of the school feeding programme to ensure children from the most vulnerable families will still benefit from daily nutritious meals at home until school kitchens reopen and resume the provision of in-school meals.
WFP will provide nutritionally diversified food packages to some 50, 000 primary school children across Armenia as part of its School Feeding programme that is funded by the Russian Federation. As part of the gradual nationalisation of the programme, the Government of Armenia will in parallel support around 50,000 additional school children.
WFP and the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sport (MoESCS) are providing take-home rations to school children in Armenia during the first semester of the 2020/21 academic year.
This one-off distribution supports the food needs of children and their families for 80 days. The food packages provided both by WFP and the Government include basic staples like buckwheat, lentils, pasta, rice, oil and wheat flour.
