WFP Head convenes new advisory group to strengthen response for victims and survivors of sexual exploitation, abuse and harassment
In 2025, the advisory group will concentrate on amplifying local voices, shaping global policies and practices, prioritizing accessibility and inclusion, and fostering peer-to-peer learning.
The new advisory group was established during a consultation meeting held recently in Rome with a dozen local civil society organizations from countries at high risk of sexual exploitation and abuse. The group, whose specializations include supporting women and girls in vulnerable situations, tailoring prevention services for marginalized groups, engaging men and boys in preventing sexual exploitation, and promoting gender equality, shared stories, discussed challenges, and explored solutions.
The group also met with members of the WFP Executive Board to present the key outcomes of their first in-person consultation.
WFP Executive Director Cindy McCain, who became the Champion on Protection from Sexual Exploitation and Abuse and Sexual Harassment (PSEAH) principal in January 2024, indicated that the work of the advisory group to operationalize a victim- and survivor-centered approach would be one of her key three priorities.
Director McCain has a significant history of working on issues of PSEAH in previous positions, including advocating against human trafficking and sexual exploitation. She prioritizes listening to voices on the ground during field visits to high-risk areas, ensuring these concerns turn into actionable measures taken at WFP and across the UN system. The safety and well-being of not only those WFP serves, but also the staff and partners working tirelessly to deliver critical support, is her main priority. Her tenure IASC PSEAH champion has now been extended until December 2025.
Note to Editors
The IASC PSEAH champions set the tone for all entities by bringing together IASC and external partners around a common vision and a comprehensive multi-year strategy for protecting against sexual exploitation, abuse, and harassment. Find out more about the work of IASC Champions.
