Rabia and Ali at the Indira Gandhi Children Hospital

Ali lives in Kabul, Afghanistan. He’s growing up at a time when levels of moderate acute malnutrition are the highest ever recorded in the country. But we met Ali on a good day because he was about to start treatment.

His mum, Rabia, listened carefully to the doctor’s instructions. She learned that the sachets of emergency food she was taking home are specially formulated to help her little son get stronger – they’re fortified with vitamins and minerals. She made sure she knew how many sachets to give Ali every day, and when to bring him back for the next check up.

For Rabia, there is a huge relief – and a moment to feel hope again. Ali was healthy when he was born but he had begun to lose weight and get ill. It was a difficult time for the whole family. Often, there was only bread to eat – and Rabia’s saw Ali grow weaker and weaker.

With the generous support from our international donors, we're able to provide vital assistance and treatment for children like Ali.

Ali was one of 2.4 million children who WFP treated for malnutrition in 2022 in Afghanistan alone. Their malnutrition started to reverse and they gained the strength to walk, run and play.

Children around the world need the same treatment in the months ahead, and as WFP Lifesaver, you could help provide it – day by day.

Thank you for your incredible support.
