From October 2022 to October 2023, US$ to AMD and RUB to AMD exchange rates remained low, but US$ to AMD saw a significant increase in October 2023. Remittances to Armenia in September 2023 totaled US$96.9 million, with Russia as the top contributor. Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose by 0.1 percent in October 2023 compared to October 2022, while food prices decreased by 3 percent. The highest annual price drops were in "Oils and fats" (19 percent) and "Bread and cereals" (8.4 percent) groups. Certain regions had higher food prices (Armavir and Ararat) and lower prices (Tavush, Lori, Kotayk, Shirak, and Syunik). In fuel prices, regular diesel decreased by 12 percent in October 2023, while petrol increased by 9 percent from October 2022. However, both diesel and petrol prices increased by 8 and 7 percent, respectively, compared to September 2023.

Energy is vital within humanitarian settings and in vulnerable areas to enable improved livelihoods, preventing shocks and building resilience. It is also a necessary condition for development and underpins the achievement of two-thirds of the SDFs. WFP’s efforts to achieve zero hunger can be strengthened by providing the energy resources needed to produce, transform, and consume food thereby enhancing both food security and nutrition. Somalia’s prolonged humanitarian crisis is marked by recurrent climate shocks like droughts and floods. WFP implements Integrated risk management tools like anticipatory action to mitigate the impact of these shocks.

This paper explains the collaboration of the World Food Programme (WFP) and esteemed partners, including the University of Oxford, IGAD Climate Prediction and Applications Centre (ICPAC), Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD), European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) and the Ethiopia Meteorological Institute (EMI) with grant support from Google.org. This joint effort harnesses collective expertise in artificial intelligence, weather prediction, early warning systems and emergency response to protect lives and livelihoods in Eastern Africa.

When anticipatory action is layered with social protection, it can help address the climate risks affecting the most vulnerable populations in a timely, sustainable, and cost-effective manner. The objective of this document is to provide an overview of ways to integrate anticipatory action and social protection, WFP’s added value in this agenda and key steps for a successful integration.

This decentralized evaluation was commissioned by the WFP Nepal Country Office and covers the climate change and adaption activities assisted by the Adaptation Fund during 2018-2022.  It was carried out from October 2022 to July 2023.

WFP is a leader in promoting sovereign insurance products that can offer rapid finance to affected communities in the event of major disaster. By connecting climate and disaster risk financing instruments with social protection systems at regional or local levels, these schemes can better reach and target the needs of vulnerable people in response to climate shocks.
