Hunger Crises Will Escalate Unless We Invest More In Addressing Root Causes, Say UN Food Agency Chiefs On Visit To Drought-Hit Ethiopia

ADDIS ABABA - Speaking at the conclusion of a four-day visit to Ethiopia, including to the drought-stricken Somali region, the heads of the United Nations food agencies made a joint call for greater investment in long-term activities that strengthen people’s resilience to drought and the impacts of climate shocks.

WFP/FAO/IFAD Media Advisory: UN Food Agencies’ Chiefs To Visit Drought-Hit Ethiopia

ROME/ADDIS ABABA - The heads of the three UN food agencies will visit Ethiopia to highlight the critical food and nutrition security situation. Consecutive climate shocks have resulted in back-to-back droughts, which have caused hunger to soar and malnutrition rates to rise to alarming levels. The agency chiefs will discuss how best to strengthen their support to the Government and its systems so that Ethiopia can continue meeting its development goals while simultaneously addressing humanitarian challenges along the way.

Danish Funding Supports Vulnerable People In Horn Of Africa Drought And South Sudan

NAIROBI – The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) welcomes a US$10.7 million (75 million Danish Krone) contribution from the Government of Denmark to help roll back famine in South Sudan and to assist hungry people in Horn of Africa countries hit by drought.

Crucial Funding To WFP Avoids Suspension Of Food Assistance To Drought-Affected People In Ethiopia

ADDIS ABABA – Thanks to timely contributions from key donors, the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) is able to continue food distributions later this month for more than 1.5 million people in the Somali region of Ethiopia, and can scale up nutrition help to more than 700,000 children and nursing mothers in the most drought-affected areas. The scaling up of food and nutrition support is crucial to prevent vulnerable people falling into a deeper crisis.
