Somalia faces complex challenges of protracted conflict, drought, displacement, limited social services and reduced humanitarian funding.

Poverty remains widespread, with 54 percent of the population living below the poverty line. Education access is low and young people have limited opportunities.

Frequent and severe weather extremes have devastated agriculture and livelihoods, deepening vulnerabilities across the country. At the same time, persistent conflict is forcing hundreds of thousands to flee their homes in search of food and shelter.

The impact has been profound: 6 million people are facing emergency levels of hunger, under the IPC global standard measurement. The severity of hunger has increased sharply since early 2025. 
Somalia is also facing one of the world's most severe malnutrition crises, with nearly 2 million children suffering acute malnutrition, including almost 500,000 facing severe malnutrition. 

The World Food Programme delivers life-saving food, nutrition and cash assistance while strengthening long-term resilience through social protection, school meals and climate adaptation programmes. 

However, critical funding shortages are putting our life-saving work at risk. Current resources allow the World Food Programme to reach only a fraction of those in need, despite rising hunger, displacement and climate-related risks. Urgent support is essential to prevent a major humanitarian catastrophe.
